This journal will take you through each day of our week-long journey, sharing the highlights, the challenges, and the remarkable moments that made this trip so special. So, buckle up and join us on this Tassie adventure!

Day 1: Arriving in Tasmania

After a smooth flight from Melbourne, we landed in Hobart, Tasmania’s charming capital. The moment we stepped off the plane, we could feel the crisp air and the sense of excitement as we embarked on our Tassie Tour. We picked up our campervan from the rental agency and hit the road, eager to start exploring.

Our first stop was the picturesque town of Richmond, located just a short drive from Hobart. Known for its historic buildings and quaint streets, Richmond took us back in time. We strolled through the town, admiring the Georgian architecture and browsing the charming shops that lined the main street.

One of the highlights of our visit to Richmond was the Richmond Bridge, Australia’s oldest bridge still in use. We marveled at the craftsmanship of this impressive sandstone structure and took in the views of the tranquil Coal River that flowed beneath it.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Hobart and checked into our campsite for the night. Settling into our cozy campervan, we enjoyed a delicious meal while reflecting on the day’s adventures. With the sound of nature surrounding us, we knew that this journey was off to a fantastic start.

Despite the long day of travel, we couldn’t resist taking a leisurely stroll along the Hobart waterfront. The twinkling lights of the city illuminated the harbor, creating a magical ambiance. We stopped by the iconic Salamanca Market, a bustling hub of local vendors selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts.

As darkness descended, we made our way back to our campsite, eager to rest and recharge for the adventures that awaited us in the days to come. With our hearts full of anticipation, we drifted off to sleep, excited for what Day 2 had in store.

Day 2: Exploring Hobart

Waking up refreshed and eager to continue our Tassie adventure, we started Day 2 with a hearty breakfast at a local café in Hobart. Fueled up and ready to explore, we set out to discover the charms of the city.

Our first stop was the iconic Mount Wellington, a towering peak that overlooks Hobart. We drove up the scenic winding road to the summit, where we were rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the city, the harbor, and the surrounding landscapes. The crisp mountain air invigorated our spirits, and we couldn’t help but snap a multitude of photos to capture the moment.

Next, we ventured into the heart of Hobart to visit the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. This cultural treasure trove showcases the rich history, natural wonders, and artistic endeavors of Tasmania. From ancient Aboriginal artifacts to modern artworks, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the island’s past and present.

After immersing ourselves in history and culture, it was time to indulge in some of Hobart’s famed culinary delights. We headed to Salamanca Place, a vibrant waterfront area lined with cafes, restaurants, and galleries. The fragrant aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air as we sampled delicious local pastries and treats.

No visit to Hobart would be complete without a visit to the iconic MONA (Museum of Old and New Art). This cutting-edge museum is renowned for its provocative and thought-provoking contemporary art installations. We marveled at the eclectic and sometimes controversial exhibits, each one challenging our perceptions and igniting conversations.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Battery Point, one of Hobart’s oldest and most charming neighborhoods. The narrow streets lined with 19th-century cottages and grand mansions ooze with character and history. We wandered through the leafy lanes, taking in the architectural beauty and imagining the stories that unfolded within these walls.

After a day of exploration, we settled down at a trendy bar for a well-deserved drink, toasting to the unforgettable experiences we had in Hobart. With contented hearts and a sense of anticipation for the days ahead, we made our way back to our campsite, excited for the next chapter of our Tassie adventure.

Day 3: Trip to Port Arthur

On Day 3 of our Tassie Tour, we embarked on a memorable journey to Port Arthur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Australia’s most significant convict-era landmarks. Located on the picturesque Tasman Peninsula, Port Arthur is steeped in history and tales of hardship.

As we drove along the scenic coastal road, the rugged cliffs and turquoise waters provided a breathtaking backdrop. Arriving at Port Arthur Historic Site, we were immediately transported back in time to the 19th-century penal colony.

We joined a guided tour, led by a knowledgeable and engaging guide who brought the stories of this eerie place to life. We explored the ruins of the penitentiary buildings, the solitary confinement cells, and the eerie underground tunnels known as the “Separate Prison.” The chilling accounts of the hardships endured by the convicts left a lasting impression, reminding us of the resilience, courage, and suffering that characterized Australia’s past.

One of the highlights of our visit was the cruise around the Isle of the Dead, a small island just off the coast of Port Arthur. The peaceful surroundings and the serenity of the graves were a stark contrast to the harsh realities of life in the convict settlement.

After a thought-provoking and emotional day at Port Arthur, we made our way back to Hobart with heavy hearts but with a deep appreciation for the opportunity to learn about this significant part of Australian history.

To end the day on a lighter note, we decided to treat ourselves to a delightful seafood dinner at one of Hobart’s renowned waterfront restaurants. We savored fresh local oysters, succulent fish, and mouthwatering prawns, all accompanied by stunning views of the harbor as a gentle breeze rustled through our hair.

As we returned to our campsite, we couldn’t help but reflect on the profound experiences we had throughout the day. Port Arthur had left an indelible mark on our souls, reminding us of the importance of remembering our past and honoring those who came before us.

With a renewed sense of gratitude and a deepened connection to Australia’s history, we retired to our campervan for a peaceful night’s sleep, eagerly anticipating the adventures that awaited us on Day 4.

Day 4: Wine Tasting in the Huon Valley

Day 4 of our Tassie Tour took us to the picturesque Huon Valley, a hidden gem known for its lush landscapes and thriving vineyards. As wine enthusiasts, we were thrilled to explore this renowned wine region and indulge in some delightful tastings.

Our first stop was at a family-owned winery nestled amidst rolling hills and vineyards. The friendly and passionate winemakers greeted us warmly, eager to share their love for their craft. We embarked on a guided tour of the vineyard, learning about the different grape varieties that flourished in this cool-climate region.

With anticipation in the air, we headed to the cellar door to sample the fruits of the winemaker’s labor. The amber hues of the Chardonnay, the velvety texture of the Pinot Noir – each sip transported us to a world of flavors and aromas. We savored the distinctive characteristics of each wine, appreciating the craftsmanship and dedication that went into creating these exquisite drops.

As we soaked in the stunning surroundings, our taste buds tingling, we couldn’t resist purchasing a few bottles to take home as cherished mementos of our time in the Huon Valley.

Energized by the wine tasting experience, we ventured further into the valley, discovering the local delights it had to offer. We stumbled upon a charming berry farm, where we picked baskets full of ripe strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries straight from the vine. The sweetness of the berries burst in our mouths, a true taste of nature’s bounty.

After satisfying our berry cravings, we made a pit stop at a quaint village bakery, known for its delectable pies. We relished each warm and flaky bite, savoring the flavors of the locally sourced ingredients.

As the sun began to set over the valley, we found ourselves at a picturesque picnic spot overlooking a tranquil river. We unpacked our basket filled with locally sourced cheeses, crusty bread, and a bottle of our favorite Huon Valley wine. To the soundtrack of birdsong and the gentle rustling of the trees, we enjoyed a leisurely picnic, toasting to the joys of discovery and the beauty of the Huon Valley.

With contented hearts and a few bottles of wine in tow, we made our way back to our campsite, reflecting on the delightful day we had spent in the Huon Valley.
